LESSONS
from a photograph

Choosing the right picture for the portrait.

A few things to consider.

  • If you are taking the picture, choose the pose. Remember that lighting is important and to not make the face too bright. The shading on the face gives a much better look in a pastel portrait. If at all possible, try to avoid using the flash because it might blow out the tones of the face or distort the color of the pet.
  • Will it be indoor or outside? Will there be props of any kind or a background that you want? The pose should be comfortable and relaxed for a person or pet.
  • If shooting indoor: it is best to have natural light on the subject from a window. When shooting outdoors: see which light your subject looks the best in. Late afternoon light shining on the side of the face can make a beautiful picture to work with.
  • Do not photograph the subject in deep shade, if possible. Pay close attention to where the shadows fall.
  • For a pet, it is good to get down to it's level and to focus on the face of the animal.
  • Clear and crisp photos are the best to work from.
  • If possible, send more than one photo. We can decide together which photo would be best to work with that way.

Remember that these are not requirements but just suggestions, and I can work with any photograph that you choose.
